Mid-century Modern Home Restoration
This 1977 home, built by well-known local architect Bill Hub, was in its original condition at the start of the project. In the end there were very few areas of this home left untouched.
The key to the success of this renovation was Sawdust Therapy's ability to partner with the homeowners to develop their vision into reality. Plans were initially drawn up, but nothing was completely finalized on paper. As the house was opened up, it seemed to guide us along the way, architectural and interior design directions became clear the further into the project we got. The house was slowly coming back to life. One of the main features of the renovation was to design, fabricate and install a main staircase - something that said "WOW". The original staircase was small and had been converted into an elevator. As the remodel unfolded, the floor was cut out and re-supported and it was found that the entire front of the home had significant water damage. The repairs and replacement quickly became an important part in the design direction of the staircase project which was ultimately replaced with a modern structure that soon became the main focal point of the home. As the new main focal point of the home, the stairs were designed with clean lines and a slightly industrial feel. The stingers, tread supports and railing posts are fabricated from powder coated tubular and flat steel. The handrails, treads and landing are solid 1 1/2" thick maple. The treads and landing are treaded with a non-slip polyurethane. There are over 400 stainless steel fittings and nearly 1000’ of stainless steel cable that make up the railings.

KitchenThe renovated kitchen features a waterfall style Ceaserstone quartz for the island top and leathered granite for the counter tops. Solid maple tongue-and-groove hardwood floor in the kitchen and a white-washed pine tongue-and-groove ceiling offer a unique contrast in wood types yet are still in the same color family. Other features include a custom vent hood over the stove, crackled subway tile patterning on the back splash, solid maple top cap on the half wall and a light tube over the kitchen island.

Entry and Great RoomThe home's entryway was once blocked by the elevator and half-wall between it and the great room. By removing the elevator, installing the new staircase, and using minimalist railings, the entire space become one cohesive open area.
Tan brick, heavy wood accents, textured walls, tiles, and outdated metals made the great room look both old and tired. Sawdust Therapy updated the fireplace with dry-laid stone and dark fireplace for a modern feel. White walls, modern lighting, and a modern railing divider help accent the new windows and revived wood ceiling. |
Family Room
The family room renovation is a classic example of what simple updates can do for a space. The imposing brick wall gave the room an almost "factory" feel. Removing the brick and the small divider wall and bar near the stairs opened the room into a usable space. With updates of a clean ceiling, modern lighting, and bright white walls with accent colors, the room is a place the family can now fully enjoy.
Master Beddroom / Bathroom and Guest Bathroom
The Master Bedroom, Master Bath, and Guest Bath were also updated during the project, with new modern features to match the rest of the home.
The Master Bedroom now features clean lines, modern lighting, and bright paint.
The Master Bathroom includes an over-sized closet with washer and dryer, a sauna, door-less custom shower, skylights and a heated tile floor.
